爓魔鬼界 (The first character has the fanqie: 閻漸反 [yán]. 爓魔 [Yama] is Sanskrit, the name of the realm of hungry ghosts. In the sūtra text it is written as 剡魔, where 剡 is pronounced in fanqie as 揚染反 [yǎn], which is an erroneous, abbreviated, and incorrect transcription. The Sanskrit sound 爓魔 is translated in meaning as the King of Equality. This officer presides over the karmas of living, dying, sins, and merits, and is the lord in charge of the eight hot hells, the eight cold hells, and all the minor hells of their retinue. He commands the ghost soldiers to pursue and seize sinners throughout the five destinies, flogging, torturing, and penalising them, determining good and evil without any respite. Thus, the Sanfu jing says: 'They will be delivered to King Yama, receiving retribution according to their karma; superior causes lead to birth in wholesome destinies, while evil karma follows into Niraya [hell],' which refers precisely to this matter).
