Banner and insignia [幖幟] (biao-zhi: piāo + yáo fan; zhi: shān + zhì fan. An older pronunciation glossed 幟 as shì, the same as "zhīshi" (acquaintance). They are banners and insignia, by which things are distinguished from one another. The Tongsuwen says: 'A pennant (huī) signal is called "biāo"; a personal insignia is called "zhì". That is, writing on red silk attached to the back is called "huī".' The Guangya says: '"Biāo" and "zhì" are banners.' Mozi says: 'A banner five chǐ long and half a bolt wide is called a "zhì"').
