Deva, Māra, and Brahmā [天魔梵] (In Sanskrit, "māra"; here translated as "hindrance", as it creates obstacles for cultivation of the Path. It is also called "the killer"; the treatise explains that because it cuts off the life of wisdom, it is called Māra. Because it constantly engages in heedlessness and harms oneself, it is called Māra. Māra is an office or rank, namely the lord of the sixth heaven. His name is Pāpīyān, which means "evil love"; this was the name of the Demon King when Śākyamuni Buddha appeared in the world. When various Buddhas appear in the world, their demons differ; for example, at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, the demon was named Duṣṭa, which means "wicked anger", etc.).
