Mahīśāsaka (Sanskrit. In the third century [after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa], it branched off from the Sarvāstivāda. In Sanskrit, mahīśāsaka, also named miyishebake; here it is translated as 'transforming the earth', also as 'teaching the earth', or 'correct earth'—it is a person's name. When this arhat was still a layman, he was a king who transformed and governed his realm, hence was called 'transformer of the earth'; now that he has entered the Buddha's Dharma, he sustains and transforms it like the earth, hence the school was named after him. The old name Mishasai is corrupt).
