Submerged and sinking (沈, the first character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 直林 [zhi/lin]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '沈 means to submerge.' It has already been fully explained in the Mahāyāna-śatadharma-śāstra. 淪, the second character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 律唇 [lü/chun]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '淪 means to sink into ruin.' The Guangya says: 'It means to steep.' The Erya says: 'Small ripples are called 淪.'
