Sever and cut (斷, the first character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 端亂 [duan/luan]. Zheng Shi's commentary on the Liji says: '斷 is like deciding.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It means to sever; it takes 斤 as radical and 㡭 as semantic component.' 㡭 has the sound of 絕, being the ancient character for 絕. The text of the treatise writes 斷, which is a popular variant. 割, the second character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 哥渴 [ge/ke]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '割 means to strip.' Zheng's commentary on the Erya says: 'It means to rend.' The Guangya says: 'It means to cut.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It takes 刀 as radical and 害 as phonetic component').
