劬勞（上具于反廣雅劬勤也鄭注禮記劬亦勞也下老刀反賈注國語勞疲也爾雅勤也說文劇也從力言用力者即勞苦）。

Toil and hardship (劬, the first character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 具于 [ju/yu]. The Guangya says: '劬 means diligent toil.' Zheng's commentary on the Liji says: '劬 also means toil.' 勞, the second character, has the fanqie phonetic spelling 老刀 [lao/dao]. Jia's commentary on the Guoyu says: '勞 means fatigue.' The Erya says: 'It means diligent toil.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It means arduous; it takes 力 as semantic component, meaning that expending effort constitutes toil and hardship').
