城隍（音皇爾疋云隍虛也說文云隍城池也有水曰池無水曰隍易云城之復于隍也從阝皇聲）。

城隍 (pronounced huang; the Erya says: "A dry moat [隍] is a depression"; the Shuowen says: "A 隍 is a city moat; when holding water it is called chi [池], when dry it is called huang [隍]"; the Book of Changes says: 'The city walls collapse into the moat'; it is formed with 'mound' [阝] with huang [皇] as phonetic).
