洗拭(上西禮反說文洗足也今亦以為洗濯之字從水先聲亦作洒也下尸翼反鄭注儀禮云拭清也郭注爾雅云拭亦清潔也說文從手式聲)。
Xi-shi (洗拭) (The first character has the fanqie xi + li. The Shuowen says: 'Xi (洗) means to wash the feet.' Nowadays it is also used as the character for washing and cleansing. It derives from shui (水, water) and xian (先) as phonetic; it is also written as 洒. The second character has the fanqie shi + yi. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the Yili says: 'Shi (拭) means to make clean.' Guo [Pu]'s commentary on the Erya says: 'Shi (拭) also means clean.' The Shuowen says: 'It derives from shou (手, hand) and shi (式) as phonetic').
