茫怖（又作[(┌@一)/一/明]同莫荒反茫遽也[(┌@一)/一/明]人晝夜作謂無日用月無月用大常思明故從明或曰[(┌@一)/一/明]人思天曉故字從明下又作悑同普故反惶怖也經文作怕疋白反憺怕也此俗音疋嫁反）。

Perplexed and terrified (茫怖: [茫 is] also written [(┌@一)/一/明], the same, fanqie 莫荒 [máng]; 茫 means hurried and confused; the character [(┌@一)/一/明] refers to people working day and night: when there is no sun they use the moon, when there is no moon they make it broad daylight, constantly longing for brightness, hence it takes the component 明 (bright); another says: [(┌@一)/一/明] means blind people yearning for dawn, hence it takes the character 明; the following character [怖] is also written 悑, the same, fanqie 普故 [bù], meaning flustered and terrified; the scripture text writes 怕, fanqie 疋白 [pà], meaning quiet and tranquil; here the popular pronunciation is fanqie 疋嫁 [pà]).
