Holding an oar (持擢: also written as 濯, the same; [fanqie] chi + xiao. The Fangyan says: "An oar (yi 揖) is called nao (撓), or called zhuo (擢). South of the Yangtze, a zhuo is larger than a nao, whereas an yi is particularly small. One who works a nao stands facing the bow of the boat and sculls it; one who works a zhuo sits facing the stern of the boat and rows it." Yi means zhuo; to advance by rowing. The character is derived from 'hand' (手). The sūtra text writes 掉, which is just a contemporary vulgar character).
