Snakes and scorpions (虵蠍): The upper character is she plus zhe fan, which is a popular form. The Shuowen takes [the radical] ta (它) to write she (蛇); she means a serpent (hui). Ta is pronounced ta, a venomous insect. The lower character is xuan plus ye fan. The Guangya says: 'Chai (scorpion).' The Boya says: 'An insect that stings people.' Both are phono-semantic characters. Chai is chou plus jie fan; shi is sheng plus yi fan.
