Rafters and beams (椽梁): The upper character is chang plus luan fan. The Fangyan says: 'From the Pass westward, between Qin and Long, it is called chuan (椽); taking "wood" (木), with zhuan (篆) abbreviated for sound. From the Pass eastward, in the territory of Zhou, it is called [...] (𢬜); in Qi, Lu, Jing, and Chu, it is called jue (桷).' The character liang (梁) takes "wood" (木) with liang (𱥻) for sound; the character liang (𱥻) takes "water" (水) and "blade" (刃), pronounced the same as above. The scripture writing liang taking "water" is incorrect; ancient writing takes "tree-trunk" (本) to write ben (泍), with the same meaning.
