火燔（下伐袁反考聲燔燒也毛詩傳云炰加火曰燔廣雅燔乾也說文從火番聲而古今之正字形）。

火燔 ('burning with fire'; the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 伐 + 袁. The Kaosheng says: "'Fan' (燔) means to burn." The Mao commentary on the Shijing says: "Roasting by applying fire is called 'fan'." The Guangya says: "'Fan' means to dry." The Shuowen says it is formed from [the radical] 火 with 番 as the phonetic component, which is the orthodox character shape past and present).
