Simiao (temple and shrine) (the *Fengsu tong* states: 'Si means an office; a court possessing laws and regulations. Places where the feudal lords halt are all called *si*.' The *Erya* states: '*Si* means to govern.' The *Sancang* states: '*Si* means an official lodge.' The character form takes 寸 as semantic classifier and 㞢 as phonetic. The *Shiming* states: '*Si* means succession; those managing affairs succeed one another therein.' The Han school of the *Shijing* states: 'Where ghosts and spirits dwell is called *miao*.' The *Baihu tong* states: 'A shrine (miao) is an appearance (mao); the revered appearance of the ancestors in the *Shijing*.' Here, taking its meaning, the ancient form of the character is used).
