兵戈: The first character is pronounced 秉 + 明 fanqie. The Cangjie pian says: “兵 means handle.” The Guangya says: “It means to defend against.” The Shiben says: “Chiyou created weapons.” Song Zhong's commentary says: “Chiyou was a minister of the Flame Emperor.” The Lüshi chunqiu says: “Chiyou sharpened his implements.” We consider that weapons represent awe-inspiring power, and awe-inspiring power means a blade. The Shuowen says: “兵 means military implements. It is formed from 廾 (pronounced like 拱), grasping a battle-axe and a blade.” In the Zhoudan script it is written with 人, 干, and 大, which is the ancient character. The second character, 戈, is pronounced 果 + 禾 fanqie. Zheng [Xuan]’s commentary on the Zhouli says: “It is a hooked spear or halberd.” The Fangyan says: “Between Wu and Yang, a halberd is called a ge.” The Shuowen says: “A flat-headed halberd. It is formed from 弋 (pronounced like 翼), picturing a horizontal crossbar.”
