僕隸（上蒲木反毛詩傳曰僕附也考聲云僕使也僕僮也顧野王云御車者也說文云給事之者從人從菐菐亦聲菐音卜古文作䑑下力計反考聲隸賤屬也僕也案隸者賤臣也說文云附著也正體作隸從隶音弟柰聲也經文從入從米作[(上/矢)*(企-止+米)]謬也俗字）。

Servants and slaves (僕隸: for the first character, the fanqie is 蒲木 [pú]. Mao's commentary on the Shijing says: '僕 means attached.' The Kaosheng says: '僕 means servant; household attendant.' Gu Yewang says: 'A charioteer.' The Shuowen says: 'One who attends to affairs. It takes radical 人 and 菐, with 菐 also phonetic; 菐 is read 卜 [bǔ].' The ancient character was written 䑑. For the second character, the fanqie is 力計 [lì]. The Kaosheng says: '隸 means menial dependents; servants.' Note: 隸 means menial subjects. The Shuowen says: 'Attached to.' The orthodox form is 隸, taking radical 隶 [dì] with 柰 as phonetic. The sūtra text writing with 入 and 米 as [(上/矢)*(企-止+米)] is erroneous and vulgar).
