眼睫 ("eyelashes": [fanqie] 精葉 [jié]. The standard form in Shuowen is written as䀹: "The hairs beside the eyes." It is composed of 目 with 夾 as the phonetic; 夾 is pronounced 甲. Examining yǎnjié: these are the hairs on the eyelids. Shiming writes it as [起-巳+毛], which is a vulgar character; it explains: "Jié means inserted, joined; inserted into the eye sockets and joined together." Tongsuwen writes it with 妾 as 𥇒, explaining: "Eye hairs are called 𥇒." Shiji says: "The eyes can see a fine down hair but cannot see their own lashes." 插 [chā] has the fanqie 楚洽 [chā].)
