剎那 (kṣaṇa: the first character has the pronunciation 察. A Sanskrit name for time. A verse in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya says: / 'One hundred and twenty kṣaṇas / make the measure of one tatkṣaṇa; / sixty of these make a lava, / and thirty of these a muhūrta, / which together make one day and night.' / I respectfully examine that, according to this verse, one day and night has thirty muhūrtas (須臾). Each single muhūrta is calculated as having thirty lavas (臘縛). Moreover, within one lava there are calculated to be sixty tatkṣaṇas (怛剎那). And within one tatkṣaṇa, it is divided into one hundred and twenty kṣaṇas (剎那). Among divisions of time, there is nothing swifter or shorter than a kṣaṇa. Now, relying on the calendrical methods of this land [China], a single day and night has twelve double-hours, collectively divided into one hundred ke (刻). Each double-hour gets eight ke and slightly more. Averaging their approximate number equally, within a single double-hour from yín to mǎo, there are calculated to be 540,000 kṣaṇas. The other double-hours follow this standard, calculating a total of 6,480,000 kṣaṇas for a day and night. If one divides it by each ke, then within a single ke there is approximately the time of 70,000 kṣaṇas. This expresses what is extremely swift and brief, shorter than the blink of an eye.)
