瑞相 ("auspicious sign"): The character has the fanqie reading [ʑ- + -wiɛ = ruì] (時偽反). The Zhouli says that the Master of Auspicious Jades oversees the jade tallies (瑞). Zheng Xuan says: "瑞 means a tally of trust." Examining the Master of Auspicious Jades: it was like modern tally seals and imperial seals. The Cangjie says: "瑞 means a responsive omen." Gu Yewang says: "When a sovereign's abundant virtue moves Heaven and Earth, Heaven and Earth respond with trustworthy omens (信瑞). When virtue moves the mountains, rivers, hills, and knolls, the numinous plant (zhi) takes root; when rites and music are instituted, auspicious winds arrive. All these are propitious omens (祥瑞)." The Shuowen says: "瑞 means a jade of trust. It is formed with the radical 玉 ('jade') and an abbreviated 耑 as phonetic."
