Haughty and arrogant (傲慢; the first character is fanqie 遨 + 到. Kong's Commentary on the Shangshu says: "傲 means arrogant." Du's Commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "Disrespectful." The Shuowen says: "Haughty; it takes radical 人 and 𢾕 as phonetic." The second character is fanqie 蠻 + 辨. The Kaosheng says: "Disrespectful and indolent; fearless." It is also written with radical 女 or 人 as 嫚 or 僈. The Wenzidian says: "Indolent and slighting; it takes radical 心 and 曼 as phonetic." 曼 is pronounced 万).
