Thwarted and broken (挫折; the first character is fanqie 祖 + 臥. Jia's Commentary on the Guoyu says: "To break its sharp vanguard is called 挫." The second character is fanqie 戰 + 熱; its gloss and meaning are the same as the character above. The Shuowen says: "To break down; both take radical 手, and 坐 and 斤 [respectively]").
