Wrecked merchant-vessel (破舶): The second character has the pronunciation of 白. Sima Biao's commentary on the Zhuangzi states that large ocean-going vessels are called 舶. The Guangya states that 舶 is an ocean-going boat. It enters sixty feet into the water and carries more than a thousand men, not counting goods. It is also called a Kunlun vessel. To maneuver this boat, mostly Guluo [i.e. Kunlun people] are used as sailors. Coconut husks are used to make ropes to bind it together, and galangal sugar is poured to caulk it so that water does not enter. Iron nails and plates are not used, for fear that heat from the iron might create fire; it is built by stacking timber boards. Because thin planks might break, they are several li long. It has three sections fore and aft, and sails are spread to catch the wind; it is not something that human muscle alone can move.
