Wooden beam (pronounced *fāng*. The character dictionary says: "The name of a tree." Examining the Vinaya text now, it says: "Using a wooden beam to shackle their feet"; that is to say, today's practice of drilling holes into a small square block of wood to insert the feet therein, shackling criminals. When on the hands it is called handcuffs (*niu*); when on the feet it is called foot-shackles (*xie*); they are also called fetters and pillory [*zhigu*]).
