Intimate friendship (for the first [syllable, the fanqie is] 尼 + 栗. The *Mao Commentary* to the *Classic of Poetry* says: "*Ni* means close." Du's commentary on the *Zuo tradition* says: "Intimate." The *Shuowen* writes it as 暱, saying: "Daily growing closer." It is composed of 日 [sun/day] with 匿 as phonetic).
