鑒察（上監懺反毛詩傳云鑒所以察形杜注左傳云炤也察也說文從金監聲亦作鑑）。

鑒察 (The first character has the fanqie [監懺] jiàn. The commentary on the Mao Classic of Poetry says: "A jiàn is that by which one examines forms." Du [Yu's] commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "To illuminate; to scrutinize." The Shuowen jiezi has the metal classifier [金] and 監 as phonetic. It is also written as 鑑.)
