Scabies and itching [𭼦痒]: The first character (sao + zao [sào]) is explained in the Cang Jie pian: 'Sào is scabies.' The Guangya states: 'Sores.' In the Gujin zhengzi it is formed with 'sickness' [疒] as radical and zǎo [蚤]; 蚤 is pronounced zǎo. The second character (yang + jiang [yǎng]) is explained in the Kaosheng: 'Yǎng means itching from sores, a mild form of pain.' The commentary on the Shijing states: 'Yǎng means illness.' The Shuowen states: 'An ulcer; formed with "sickness" [疒] as radical and yáng [羊] as phonetic.' In the Vinaya text it is written with yǎng [養] as 癢, which is a character used colloquially. 瘍 is pronounced yáng; 疒 is pronounced niè.
