研覈 (to investigate thoroughly; the first character is pronounced 齧堅反. The Guangya states: “Yan means mature.” The Shuowen states: “Yan means to grind; it is derived from 'stone' (石) with jian as phonetic component.” Jian is pronounced 牽. The second character is pronounced 行革反. The Shuowen states: “To examine actual affairs; it is derived from mian (面) with jiao as phonetic component.” Jiao is pronounced 擊).
