拗拉 Snapping and breaking (the first character is e + jiao [ào]; the Wenzi jilüe says: "'Ao' means breaking an object by bending it with the hands; [the character] derives from 'hand' with 'you' phonetic." The second character is lan + da [lā]; He Xiu's commentary on the Gongyang zhuan says: "'La' means to break." The Gujin zhengzi says: "To break; [the character] derives from 'hand' with 'li' phonetic; it is also written as [搚-月+貝] or as 摺").
