度塹（下韱艷反顧野王云今謂城池為塹也字書云城隍也周書云無渠塹而中也說文云塹坑也從土斬聲）。

Crossing a moat (度塹; the lower character [塹] is fanqie 韱艷. Gu Yewang says: 'Nowadays the defensive moat around a city is called a 塹.' Lexicons state: 'City moat.' The Zhoushu says: 'Having no drainage ditch or moat, yet striking the target.' The Shuowen says: 'A moat is a pit.' It is composed with 'earth' (土) as semantic and 斬 as phonetic).
