冥闇（上覓瓶反考聲云冥幽暗也詩傳云冥窈也鄭箋詩云夜也郭注尒雅云幼稚者冥昧也說文云幽也從冂六日數十六日而月始虧也從冂聲冂音覓下菴紺反埤蒼云闇劣弱也字書云冥也說文云閉門也從門音聲也窈音要小反稚音遲里反）。

Deep darkness (冥闇: the first character has the fanqie 覓 + 瓶. The Kaosheng says: “冥 means obscure and dark.” The Shizhuan says: “冥 means deep and secluded.” Zheng [Xuan]'s notes on the Shijing say: “It means night.” Guo [Pu]'s commentary on the Erya says: “The young and immature are dim and ignorant.” The Shuowen says: “It means dark; classified under 冂 and the number six, since on the sixteenth day the moon begins to wane; with 冂 phonetic.” 冂 has the sound 覓. The second character has the fanqie 菴 + 紺. The Picang says: “闇 means inferior and weak.” Character dictionaries say: “It means dark.” The Shuowen says: “Shutting a door; classified under the radical 'gate' (門) with 音 phonetic.” 窈 has the fanqie 要 + 小. 稚 has the fanqie 遲 + 里).
