忌憚（上其記反杜注左傳云忌畏也敬也下檀且反毛詩箋云憚難也畏也說文二字竝從心已及單皆聲也）。

Dreading and fearing (忌憚: the first character has the fanqie 其記; Du Yu's Commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: '忌 means to fear; it also means to revere.' The second character has the fanqie 檀且; Zheng's Commentary on the Mao Odes says: '憚 means difficult; it also means to fear.' The Shuowen jiezi says that both characters are formed from the semantic component "mind" (心), with 己 and 單 functioning as phonetics respectively).
