Rivaling adversary (伉敵: the first character is pronounced kang-lang [kàng]; Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan states: '伉 also means adversary.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'It is formed with [the semantic classifier] rén (person) and has kàng as its phonetic component.' The second character is pronounced ting-de [dí]; Gu Yewang says: '敵 means a match, opposing one another.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'It is formed with [the semantic classifier] pū (tap) and has chì as its phonetic component.' The treatise writes 敵, which is a vulgar character. 啻 is pronounced de [dī]).
