蜆蛤 [Clams] (The first character has the fanqie 袄典 [ǎo + diǎn]. The Wenzi jilüe says: 'A shelled aquatic creature; it resembles a clam but is smaller.' It is also written 顯, meaning a small slug, also named 縊女. The second character has the fanqie 甘臘 [gān + là]. The Kaosheng says: 'Clams and mussels of their kind.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'There are three kinds of bivalves, all born of the sea. The gémǎ [clam] is transformed from a sparrow a thousand years old; in Qin it is called zhuànglì. The hǎipèi [sea clam] is transformed from a swallow a hundred years old. The kuígé [giant clam], also called fùlèi, is transformed from a bat. It is formed with the "insect" semantic component and the phonetic 合.')
