Looking at a stump (見杌: the second character has the fanqie 五骨; the Yunlüe states: '杌 means a tree without branches.' The Kaosheng states: 'The appearance of a tree trunk emerging short.' The Wenzidian shuo states: 'Formed from [the semantic component] "tree/wood" (木) and has 兀 as phonetic.').
