稼穡（上家暇反鄭注周禮云種穀曰稼馬融注論語云樹五穀曰稼也下所棘反毛詩傳云種之曰稼斂稅曰穡考聲謂收田苗也說文二字竝從禾家嗇皆聲也論作穡俗字也）。

Sowing and reaping (稼穡; the first character is 家 + 暇. Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the *Zhouli* states: "Sowing grain is called 稼." Ma Rong's commentary on the *Analects* states: "Planting the five grains is called 稼." The second character is 所 + 棘. The *Mao Shi Commentary* states: "Sowing it is called 稼; gathering and harvesting is called 穡." The *Kaosheng* states: "Refers to harvesting the field's sprouts." The *Shuowen jiezi* states: "Both characters are composed of 'grain' (禾), with 家 and 嗇 as their respective phonetics." In the treatise it is written as 穡, which is a vulgar character).
