聰叡（上儷公反韓詩云聰明也說文察也從耳忩聲下悅惠反廣雅叡亦聡也集訓云聖必通於微也說文深明也從[(├/(同-(一/口)+、))*又][(├/(同-(一/口)+、))*又]音藏安反從目從谷省聲也）。

Astute and discerning (聰叡: the first character has the fanqie 儷公; Han Ying's Commentary on the Odes states: '聰 means bright and discerning.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It means observant. It is formed from [the semantic component] "ear" (耳) and has 忩 as phonetic.' The second character has the fanqie 悅惠; the Guangya states: '叡 also means acute.' The Jixun states: 'A sage must penetrate into subtleties.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Profoundly luminous. It is formed from [(├/(同-(一/口)+、))*又]'—[(├/(同-(一/口)+、))*又] having the fanqie 藏安—'and is formed from "eye" (目) with the character 谷 abbreviated as phonetic.').
