為拳(倦員反考聲云拳手拳也案論文云五指合為拳即握掌也說文手也從手卷省聲論作捲用力也非其義也)。
為拳 (pronounced *juan* combined with *yuan* [fanqie: juan-yuan]; the Kaosheng says: “拳 means the fist of the hand.” On examination, the text of the treatise says: “When the five fingers close together, they form a fist,” which means clenching the palm. The Shuowen says: “A hand; formed with 手, with 卷 abbreviated as phonetic component.” In the treatise it is written as 捲 [to roll up], denoting the application of strength, which is not its meaning here).
