掘鑿（上羣勿反考聲掘穿也斷也謂斷其根也說文從手屈聲下藏作反聲類鑿鏨也說文穿木具也從金[(鑿-臼+(函-了))-金]亦聲鏨音雜含反）。

Dig and chisel (掘鑿: the first character *fanqie* 羣 + 勿. The *Kaosheng* says: “掘 means to bore into, to sever; meaning to sever its roots.” *Shuowen jiezi* says: “Composed of 手 [‘hand’] with 屈 as phonetic.” The second character is *fanqie* 藏 + 作. *Shenglei* says: “鑿 means to chisel.” *Shuowen jiezi* says: “An implement for boring into wood; composed of 金 [‘metal’] with [(鑿-臼+(函-了))-金] also phonetic.” 鏨 is pronounced *fanqie* 雜 + 含).
