Eggshell (luanqiao 卵㲉: the upper word is [pronounced with the fanqie] lang + guan [luan]. The Shuowen says: 'All creatures without milk are born from eggs; walking creatures are born from wombs.' A questioner asked: 'How is it that fish, not being flying creatures, are born from eggs?' The answer is: 'Birds float upon the clouds, and fish float upon the water; they are of the same kind.' In ancient script it is written [丱-(〡*┘)+(巳-口+?)]; in seal script it is written [兆-?+?], a pictographic character. The lower word is [pronounced with the fanqie] ku + jiao [qiao].
