Sudden and violent (猝[日/出/大/((犀-尸)-牛+十)]): The upper character has the fanqie cu + ne (cù). The correct standard form takes the radical ‘dog’ (犬) as 猝. The Shenglei says: ‘Cāngcù (仓猝) means hurried and swift.’ The Kaosheng says: ‘It means flurried, hurried.’ It is also written as 碎 with the same meaning. The sūtra text writes it as 卒, which is an abbreviated form; it is also easily confused with bīngzú (兵卒, foot soldiers), so it is proper to change it to take ‘dog’ as the standard form. The lower character has the fanqie pu + mao (bào). The Kaosheng says: ‘It means fierce and violent; swift; without goodness.’ The Shuowen says: ‘The character [日/出/八/((犀-尸)-牛+十)] takes “sun” (日), “emerge” (出), “two hands” (廾), and [(犀-尸)-牛+十] as a compound ideograph.’ 廾 is pronounced gong (gǒng); [(犀-尸)-牛+十] is pronounced tao (tāo). The current sūtra text writes it as 暴, which is a popular form.
