Standard model (規模): Gui has the fanqie gui + wei (guī). Gu Ye[wang] says: ‘A compass (guī) makes circles while a carpenter's square (jǔ) makes squares.’ Mencius says: ‘Without the compass and square, one cannot form squares and circles,’ which refers to this. The Kaosheng says: ‘Guī means round; correct; measure.’ Zheng Xuan says: ‘A guī is an instrument for making correct circles.’ The Shuowen says: ‘Guī has rules and measures; it takes “man” (夫) and “see” (見).’ Writing it with ‘arrow’ (矢) or ‘lose’ (失) is erroneous. 度 has the fanqie tu + luo (duó). The lower character has the fanqie mu + pu (mó). Zheng Xuan's subcommentary to the Mao Shijing says: ‘Mó means law; it also says: a pattern.’ The Kaosheng says: ‘Mó means form; model.’ In ancient script it is written as 𱳥, pronounced the same as above.
