Contract and tally (邀𢍆: the upper character is yi-jiao [fanqie]. The Kaosheng says: "邀 means to block or solicit." Du Yu's commentary to the Zuo zhuan says: "邀 means to seek or demand." The Zishu says: "邀 means to follow; to seek." It is also written with the radical 彳 as 徼; the gloss and meaning are the same. The lower character is qing-ji [fanqie]. The Yunying says: "契 means contract; agreement." Zheng Zhong says: "契 is an inscribed tallied document." Zheng Xuan says: "契 is what is now called a quàn (券)." It derives from 力. The Kaosheng says: "The large is called a quàn; the small is called a qì." Du Yu says: "It refers to the text of a binding contract." In antiquity, two ceremonies were united by notching the sides, each retaining one half as proof. It derives from 㓞 and 廾; it is an ideogrammatic compound and associative character. 券 has the phonetic reading kuang-yuan [fanqie]; 㓞 is kou-ba [fanqie]; 廾 is gong).
