殄滅（上田現反孔安國注尚書云殄絕也爾雅殄盡也說文亦同從歹㐱聲也下綿結反考聲云滅亡也韻英云滅沒也集訓云滅絕也韻詮云滅消也說文滅盡也從水從戌從火戌是火墓戌中有相水滅火故從水從戌或作滅亦通也）。

Extinguish (殄滅; first character tian + xian fanqie; Kong Anguo's commentary on the Shangshu says: "Tian (殄) means to cut off." The Erya says: "Tian means to exhaust." The Shuowen agrees; it takes the bad/death radical (歹) with zhen (㐱) phonetic. Second character mian + jie fanqie; the Kaosheng says: "Mie (滅) means to perish." The Yunying says: "Mie means to sink away." The Jixun says: "Mie means to cut off." The Yunquan says: "Mie means to dissipate." The Shuowen says: "Mie means to exhaust completely." It takes water (水), xu (戌), and fire (火); xu is the grave of fire, and within xu is water mutually extinguishing fire, hence it takes water and xu. Writing it as 灭 is also acceptable.).
