Gengjia River [Gaṅgā River] (qi-sheng fan. In various sūtras and treatises, it is written as Heng River, Hengjia River, Hengjia River, or Qiangjia River; these are all erroneous. This river flows eastward from Lake Anavatapta out of an elephant's mouth and empties into the Eastern Sea. Former translations say it comes from Heaven, because external texts there say it originally came from the ear on the top of Maheśvara's head and flowed down upon the earth. Because this god manifests at the peak of the Snowy Mountains, they speak thus. Seeing it arrive from on high, they said it comes from Heaven).
