魍魎(古文蝄蜽二形同亡強力掌反說文蝄蜽山川之精物也通俗文木石柱怪謂之魍魎故也)。

魍魎 [nature spirits / wangliang] (in ancient script written as 蝄 and 蜽; the two forms take the fanqie 亡強 [w- + -ang = wang] and 力掌 [l- + -iang = liang]: The Shuowen states: “The wangliang (蝄蜽) are quintessential spirits of mountains and rivers.” The Tongsu wen states: “Monstrous apparitions of trees and rocks are called wangliang; hence the term”).
