Analyse and dissect (剖析: the first character [剖] is fanqie 普口 [pǒu]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: "剖 is like dividing." Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: "Dividing in the middle is called 剖." The Cangjiepian says: "剖 also means to split." The Wenzidian shuo says: "To judge or sever." It is formed with the knife radical [刀] and 咅 as phonetic, with the fanqie 他口 [tǒu]. The second character [析] is fanqie 星積 [xī], which was already fully glossed above in Fascicle 2).
