天竺 [India] (Sometimes called 身毒 [Shendu] or 賢豆 [Xiandou], which are both corruptions. Properly it is India [Indu]. 'Indu' is the name of the moon; the moon has a thousand names, and this is one of them. It is called so precisely because in that land holy and wise beings succeeded one another, awakening sentient beings and illuminating them from above like the moon. Another explanation says that Xiandou was originally named *Indravadana*, which translates to 'abode of the lord,' referring to the Lord of the Gods [Śakra]; because it was protected by the Lord of the Gods, it was named so by the world for ages past).
