乳嬰（而主反說文人及鳥生子曰乳三蒼乳子也子養也嬰音於盈反三蒼女曰嬰男曰兒釋名云人始生曰嬰兒胸前曰嬰投之嬰前而乳養之故謂嬰兒也）。

乳嬰 [nursing an infant] (Fanqie: 而主 [ér + zhǔ, *rǔ*]. The *Shuowen* states: 'When humans and birds bear offspring, it is called 乳.' The *Sancang* states: '乳 means bearing children; rearing children.' 嬰 is pronounced 於盈 [yū + yíng, *yīng*]. The *Sancang* states: 'A female child is called 嬰; a male child is called 兒.' The *Shiming* says: 'A newly born human is called an *yīng'ér* [infant]; the chest is called 嬰. Placing it before one's chest to suckle and nurture it is why it is called an infant [嬰兒].')
