Grind and sharpen (磨礪: in character glossaries, it is now written as 厲, both with the fanqie 力制, *lì*): The *Shanhai jing* states: 'Mount Yanzici has many whetstones.' Guo Pu says: 'That is, grinding stones.' The *Shangshu* states: 'If you are metal, I will use you as a whetstone.' Kong Anguo says: 'A fine whetstone (*dǐ*) is finer than a coarse whetstone (*lì*); both can be used to sharpen blades.' *Dǐ* has the sound *zhī*.
